Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is ISPS?
ISPS stands for International Ship and Port Facility Security. The ISPS Code is implemented through Chapter XI-2 Special measures to enhance maritime security in the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). The ISPS Code applies to ships on international voyages (including passenger ships, cargo ships of 500 GT and upwards, and mobile offshore drilling units) and the port facilities serving such ships.
The main objectives of the ISPS Code are:
To detect security threats and implement security measures
To establish roles and responsibilities concerning maritime security for governments, local administrations, ship and port industries at the national and international level
To collate and promulgate security-related information
To provide a methodology for security assessments so as to have in place plans and procedures to react to changing security levels
2. What is measurement weight in air cargo?
With air cargo, the bigger one of gross weight and measurement weight will be used as chargeable weight. The measurement (volume) weight of a carton equals “length*width*height/6000” (or equivalently “CBM*167”). For example, the measurement of one carton are 35cm, 40cm and 60cm and the gross weight is 10 KG. The measurement weight is 14 KG ( 35*40*60/6000). As measurement weight is bigger than gross weight, 14 KG shall be taken as chargeable weight.
Equivalently, the volume of this carton is 0.084 CBM, the weight is 14 KG (0.084*167).
3. Why do the cartons need strips as when exporting from Guangzhou by air?
Guangzhou airport required strips outside the package of the cartons. Carton package with strips are strong and deforming can be prevented.
Paper cartons and woven bags are common packing material. Cartons without strips or inadequately packed are not allowed to go inside the airport. As packaging in airport consumes much time and money, customers are strongly recommended to pack and strip cartons before we pick up the goods.
4. Is there any weight limit of single carton in air cargo?
The weight per carton is advised to be not more than 80 KG, as some airlines such as Thai Air Asia(FD) demanded. With Guangzhou airport, if cargo weights more than 80 KG, forklift charge may occur. The first forklift charges 40 RMB, after that 20 RMB per forklift. Customers are advised not to pack cartons into too heavy or too big size.
